Increased levels of job stress <\/span><span class=\"s4\">(<\/span><span class=\"s4\">perceived as<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> having <\/span><span class=\"s4\">lots of demands<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> but little control<\/span><span class=\"s4\">) <\/span><span class=\"s4\">have been <\/span><span class=\"s4\">associated with increased rates of heart attack, hypertension, and other disorders. In New York, Los Angel<\/span><span class=\"s4\">e<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s<\/span><span class=\"s4\">,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and other <\/span><span class=\"s4\">large cities<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, the relationship between job stress and heart attacks is so well acknowledged<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> that any police officer who suffers a coronary event on or off the job is assumed to have a work-related injury and is compensated accordingly.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\">Stress is a highly personalized phenomenon and can vary widely even in identical situations<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. One survey showed that having to complete paperwork was more stressful for many police officers than the dangers associated with pursuing criminals. The severity of job stress depends on the magnitude of the demands <\/span><span class=\"s6\">and<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the individual\u2019s sense of control or decision-making latitude <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in dealing with them.
